She graduated with honors in 1974 from DePauw University with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and a minor in Psychology, and was named an outstanding senior woman in the Economics department. Ann has been an active community volunteer since moving to Lewisburg, serving many educational organizations, including PTO and Read Aloud Program of Lewisburg Elementary School, Communities in Schools of Greenbrier County, and The Tutoring Center in Lewisburg. She was a Girl Scouts troop leader for 16 years and is a member of the Lewisburg Building Commission. She also is a founding and current board member of the Greater Greenbrier Community Foundation.

The Forts have been generous donors and loyal supporters of the Foundation, In 2008, they were named “Benefactors of the Year” by the Washington, D.C.-based Council for Resource Development, which recognizes individuals who have shown extraordinary vision toward the development of community colleges. In their more than 20 years of service to the College, the Forts have created a number of scholarships to help students seeking higher education in the nine-county region served by New River Community and Technical College. Without the leadership of the Forts, bright and aspiring students would not have the facilities and opportunities for learning that exist today in Lewisburg and across southern West Virginia.
