Established by Mr. Vernon Walker in memory of his late wife Sherrell, who worked as an RN at Summersville Regional Medical Center for over 30 years. This scholarship is designated for students who are pursuing a career in health care and who reside in Nicholas County.
The Marlinton Rotary Club Health Sciences Scholarship was established to provide assistance to graduating seniors from Pocahontas County High School pursuing a career in healthcare.
Criteria for Selection
- Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 9 semester hours.
- The student must maintain a 2.5 grade point average.
- Applicants must be enrolled in an Allied Health program at New River Community and Technical College.
- Applicants must be a graduate of Pocahontas County High School.
The Ruth King Scholarship was established to honor the memory of a beloved employee of the Greenbrier College for Women. Her duties were to ensure the students dressed appropriately for dinner, assisted in teaching the students proper deportment and etiquette, serve as a Resident in the Dormitory, and later in her career served as the Dietician for the Greenbrier College for Women, current site of New River CTC’s Greenbrier Valley Campus. The scholarship was endowed by the family of Ms. King with the support of friends and Greenbrier College for Women Alumni.

- Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours.
- The student must maintain a 2.5 grade point average.
- Preference will be given to students from Greenbrier Valley that are pursuing a course of study in the hospitality programs.

Clarence A. “Bussie” Allen operated Brown’s Transfer Company and served on President Jimmy Carter’s Small Business Task Force. The scholarship was established in his memory to assist minority students at New River Community and Technical College.

Criteria for Selection
- Must have a 3.0 grade point average or better at graduation.
- Achieved a score of 20 or higher on the ACT or 1400 on the SAT.
- Be able to demonstrate a financial need for the scholarship.
- Must have a mother, father, step-mother, step-father, sister, brother, grandmother or grandfather who has been employed or is currently employed in a coal related industry.
