The McElhenney-Fry-Kirven Scholarship was given to the Greenbrier Community College Foundation, Inc. by the Elizabeth Fry and Dupont Kirven Foundation to honor the Reverend John and Mrs. Rebecca Walkup McElhenney, organizers of the Lewisburg Academy in 1812, which is now the Greenbrier Valley campus of New River Community and Technical College. This scholarship is awarded on the basis of student achievement and aspirations in academic, leadership, and citizenship, and is not awarded on the basis of financial need.
Criteria for Selection
- Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student taking a minimum of 15 semester hours.
- The student must maintain a 3.2 grade point average.
Essay Requirement
- Applicant must submit a typewritten essay (1,000 word limit) reflecting on the particular values shown in the life of Reverend John and Mrs. Rebecca Walkup McElhenney and how one or more of those values are reflected in the applicant’s academic, leadership, and citizenship achievements and aspirations.
